Dynamic Duo Addresses Mental Health and Safety Challenges in the ByWard Market

It was announced in the media last month that businesses in the ByWard Market have hired Shield Security Services to manage safety concerns in their community. Nearby residents and business owners say they fear for their safety and have noticed a surge in loitering, drug use, drug dealing, and people dealing with mental health challenges.

“We are committed to helping the ByWard Market businesses and residents feel safer,” says Jonathan Murray, Owner of Shield Security Services. To address the issues of mental health in downtown Ottawa, Jonathan has joined forces with his twin sister Yvette Murray, co-owner of Continuous Training Solutions and a Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Together, their objective is to help remove the stigma associated with mental health issues.

They are inviting interested members of the community, on a first-come-first-serve basis, to attend Mental Health First Aid training at no fee on Tuesday, November 20 and Wednesday, November 21st, 2018 in downtown Ottawa. A special thank you to the Salvation Army for sponsoring the venue. This initiative is to assist with the understanding of the various mental health problems and how to get help.

It’s a family affair: this Mental Health First Aid training is sponsored by Shield Security Services, Continuous Training Solutions, and seoplus+, a digital marketing company based in the Market and owned by Jonathan and Yvette Murray’s nephew Brock Murray.

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. MHFA certified training is an evidence-based two-day program produced by the Mental Health Commission of Canada that has been available all over Canada since 2007.
